What is Healthy Waterways London?

Healthy Waterways London is a partnership of London boroughs, the Port of London Authority and the Canal and River Trust. The project aims to improve air quality and protect the health of boating communities living in London, as well as those who live, work, learn and travel alongside London’s waterways.

The project comprises three main elements:

  1. Community survey

The project is about working with London’s boating community to help to improve air quality and protect everyone’s health, so it is essential that we listen to the views and ideas of people living on boats.

We will be carrying out a survey to learn more about how air pollution is affecting health and wellbeing along London’s inland waterways. This is being delivered by RRR Consultancy.

  2. Clean air awareness campaign

Taking the learnings from the community survey, we will work with the boating community to co-design a clean air communications and awareness campaign.

The intention of the campaign will be to build awareness of air pollution and the ways we can all reduce our exposure to it, including highlighting any opportunities to access support and guidance.

  3. Producing a Healthy Waterways Strategy

Again involving participatory co-design, we will produce a Healthy Waterways Strategy summarising what we have learned from the community survey and the clean air awareness campaign.

The Strategy will set out a framework for how national, regional and local government, the Canal & River Trust, Port of London Authority and other stakeholders can work for and with canal boating communities to help improve air quality and health for everyone living on and next to London’s inland waterways.

The project is funded by the Mayor of London’s Air Quality Fund.
